Astigmatism and Presbyopia

Astigmatism and presbyopia are two of the most common vision conditions. Astigmatism affects how clearly you see at all distances, while presbyopia affects near vision as you get older. Both are easily corrected with the right lenses.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism occurs when the front surface of your eye (the cornea) or the lens inside your eye isn't perfectly round. Instead of being shaped like a football, it's more like a rugby ball. This causes light to focus at multiple points rather than one, resulting in blurred or distorted vision at all distances.

Astigmatism is extremely common — most people have some degree of it. It's usually present from birth and often occurs alongside myopia or hyperopia. Mild astigmatism may not need correction, but moderate to high levels benefit from glasses or specialist contact lenses.

Common Signs

Blurred or distorted vision at all distances
Difficulty seeing fine detail
Eye strain and headaches, especially after close work
Difficulty driving at night with glare around lights
Squinting to see clearly

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is the gradual loss of your eyes' ability to focus on close-up objects. It's a natural part of ageing that affects everyone, typically becoming noticeable in your early to mid-40s.

The lens inside your eye becomes less flexible with age, making it harder to change focus from distance to near. You may find yourself holding your phone further away, needing more light to read, or struggling with small print. Even if you've never needed glasses before, presbyopia will eventually affect you.

Common Signs

Holding reading material further away to see it clearly
Difficulty reading small print, especially in low light
Eye strain or tiredness after close work
Headaches after reading or using screens
Needing to remove distance glasses to read
Solutions

Correction Options

Both conditions are easily managed with the right lenses. Our optometrists will recommend the best option based on your prescription, lifestyle and visual needs.

For Astigmatism

Cylindrical Lenses

Glasses with a cylindrical prescription correct astigmatism by compensating for the irregular curvature of the cornea.

Toric Contact Lenses

Specially designed contact lenses that stay oriented correctly on the eye to correct astigmatism. Available in daily and monthly options.

For Presbyopia

Varifocal Lenses

One pair of glasses for all distances. The lens gradually changes power from top (distance) to bottom (near), giving seamless vision at every range.

Multifocal Contact Lenses

Contact lenses that correct both distance and near vision, giving you glasses-free reading. A great option for active lifestyles.

Reading Glasses

A simple, dedicated pair for close-up work. Ideal if you only need help with reading or screen use.
