What We Treat

Conditions Covered by MECS

MECS covers a wide range of minor eye conditions that would otherwise require a visit to your GP or A&E. If you are experiencing any of the following, you can self-refer directly to us.

Red or painful eye
Eye irritation or itching
Flashes of light or new floaters
Foreign body sensation or actual foreign body in the eye
Watery or sticky eyes
Recent onset of blurred or distorted vision
Dry eyes causing discomfort
Swollen or lumpy eyelids (styes, cysts)
Eyelid problems or crusting
Light sensitivity

When to Go to A&E Instead

Some eye conditions require immediate hospital attention. Please go to your nearest A&E or eye casualty department if you experience:

Sudden complete loss of vision in one or both eyes
Chemical injury to the eye
Penetrating eye injury
Severe eye pain with vomiting (possible acute glaucoma)

Experiencing an eye problem? Self-refer to our MECS service and we can often see you the same day.
