Myopia and Hyperopia

Myopia (short-sightedness) and hyperopia (long-sightedness) are two of the most common vision conditions. Together, they affect millions of people in the UK. Both are easily corrected with glasses or contact lenses, and understanding how they work helps you make informed choices about your eye care.

How Light Focuses in the Eye

Animated diagram showing the difference between hyperopia and myopia

In myopia, light focuses in front of the retina. In hyperopia, light focuses behind the retina. Both result in blurred vision.

Myopia (Short-Sightedness)

If you're myopic, distant objects appear blurred while close-up vision is usually clear. This happens because your eye is slightly too long, or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina rather than on it.

Myopia typically develops in childhood and often gets progressively worse until the late teens or early twenties. It's becoming increasingly common, with screen time and reduced outdoor activity thought to be contributing factors.

Common Signs

Difficulty seeing distant objects clearly (e.g. TV, whiteboard)
Squinting to see things far away
Headaches from eye strain
Children sitting close to screens or holding books very close

Hyperopia (Long-Sightedness)

If you're hyperopic, close-up objects appear blurred while distance vision may be clearer. This occurs because your eye is slightly too short, or the cornea isn't curved enough, causing light to focus behind the retina.

In younger people, the eye can often compensate by working harder to focus. This means hyperopia can go undetected for years but still cause symptoms like headaches and eye strain, particularly after close work.

Common Signs

Difficulty focusing on close-up tasks (reading, phone)
Eye strain or tiredness after close work
Headaches, particularly after reading or screen use
Blurred near vision that comes and goes
Solutions

How We Correct It

Both myopia and hyperopia are easily corrected. Your optometrist will determine the right solution during your eye test.

Glasses

The simplest and most common correction. Concave lenses for myopia, convex lenses for hyperopia. We have a wide range of frames for every style and budget.

Contact Lenses

Daily, monthly, and specialist lenses available for both conditions. Our team will find the most comfortable and effective option for your eyes.
